Wilmington, North Carolina (July 18, 2026)– A driver was hospitalized after a severe crash on 17th Street in Wilmington that split a vehicle in half after it struck a tree.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, the collision occurred on 17th Street when a male driver traveling northbound in a black Acura crossed over the median and struck a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to break apart, scattering debris across the northbound lanes.
Emergency crews responded to the crash after a 911 call was received at approximately 5:53 p.m. The Wilmington Police Department, Wilmington Fire Department, and other emergency personnel arrived at the scene to assist.
Authorities said the driver was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. The driver’s age and current condition have not been released. A passenger in the vehicle was able to walk away from the crash and did not appear to have suffered injuries.
