
Charlotte, North Carolina (August 12, 2026) – A 26-year-old driver was killed in a crash on Interstate 485 Monday afternoon after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers.
The crash happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. near Exit 33 on I-485. Troopers identified the driver as Aris Townsend, who died after losing control of the vehicle, driving up an embankment, and striking a tree.
Investigators said a trooper had stopped Townsend moments earlier for allegedly operating recklessly on the I-485 outer loop near NC 49. As the trooper approached the vehicle, Townsend allegedly drove away from the traffic stop.
According to investigators, Townsend exited onto US 29 before getting back onto the I-485 inner loop. The car then collided with other vehicles before Townsend lost control and crashed.
Two people traveling in the other vehicles were transported to a hospital by emergency medical services for treatment.
