Fayetteville, North Carolina (September 08, 2026) – A 43-year-old Fayetteville man died early Tuesday morning after his vehicle crashed into a downtown roundabout following an attempted traffic stop, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.
The car accident occurred around 3:42 a.m. at the intersection of Person Street and North Cool Spring Street in downtown Fayetteville.
According to police, officers observed a vehicle stopped in traffic on Person Street after the traffic light turned green. The vehicle reportedly remained stationary, prompting officers to activate their emergency lights and siren. Investigators said the driver then accelerated away at a high rate of speed.
A short distance later, the vehicle struck the raised brick barrier and landscaped area in the center of the downtown roundabout. Officers immediately began life-saving measures before Cumberland County EMS arrived. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police identified the driver as Jermaine Abdul Bean, 43, of Fayetteville. Authorities said no other vehicles were involved in the collision.
The Fayetteville Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards has launched an internal administrative investigation in accordance with departmental policy. Officials have not stated that the incident involved a vehicle pursuit, and the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Tuesday’s fatal crash occurred just blocks from another deadly traffic-circle collision along the Person Street corridor. On November 22, 2025, Fort Bragg soldier Spc. Jackson Corum, 21, died after his motorcycle struck a traffic circle at Person Street and Old Wilmington Road. Investigators determined that crash was a single-vehicle collision and did not involve an attempted traffic stop or police pursuit.
Although the two incidents occurred at different traffic circles and under different circumstances, both crashes occurred along the Person Street corridor in downtown Fayetteville.
