Charlotte, North Carolina (August 31, 2026) – A driver was killed after being struck by another vehicle on Interstate 485 in west Charlotte early Tuesday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:11 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, on the I-485 outer loop near West Boulevard.
According to investigators, a box truck ran off the right side of the interstate and struck a concrete utility access. The truck then came to rest partially in the roadway and was facing the opposite direction of traffic.
Troopers said the truck driver exited the vehicle and was standing in the roadway beside the truck when a Toyota passenger vehicle traveling in the right lane struck him.
The Toyota driver pulled over to the left shoulder following the collision, according to authorities.
The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity as officials continue working to notify next of kin.
The crash resulted in the closure of two outbound lanes of I-485 for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
